Shogun 2 Total War V2: A Review of the Latest Update

Shogun 2 Total War is a strategy game that takes place in feudal Japan, where the player controls one of the warring clans and tries to unify the country under their rule. The game combines turn-based management of provinces, diplomacy, and research with real-time battles that feature thousands of soldiers, cavalry, and siege weapons. The game was released in 2011 by Creative Assembly and Sega, and has received several expansions and updates since then.

The latest update, V2, was released in May 2023 and brought some significant changes and improvements to the game. Here are some of the main features of the update:

  • New RPG skills and experience for generals and agents. The player can now customize their leaders and spies with different abilities and traits that affect their performance on the campaign map and on the battlefield.

  • New multi-stage sieges. The player can now assault castles and towns in multiple phases, such as scaling the walls, fighting in the streets, and storming the keep. The defender can also use fire and traps to hinder the attacker.

  • New hero units. These are special units that have unique abilities and can inspire nearby troops. They include samurai, ninja, monks, and geisha.

  • New rotating 3D campaign map. The player can now view the map from different angles and zoom in and out to see more details.

The update also fixed some bugs and balanced some aspects of the game, such as unit costs, diplomacy, and AI behavior. The update is free for all owners of the game and can be downloaded from Steam.

Shogun 2 Total War V2 is a welcome improvement to an already excellent game. It adds more depth, variety, and challenge to the gameplay, and makes the game more immersive and realistic. If you are a fan of strategy games or Japanese history, you should definitely give it a try.
